Experts Weigh In: When to See a Physiotherapist

Khairunnisa Hemani • September 3, 2021

Are you experiencing body aches and pain? Whether it is from getting older, a sports injury, or chronic illness, physiotherapy may be beneficial to manage the pain or even fix the root cause.

Physiotherapists are trained to treat physical problems through different techniques such as stretching, massage, and exercise. Their goal is to restore function and relieve your pain.

Physiotherapy may be recommended to you by your doctor if you’ve had an illness or injury that is preventing you from carrying out your daily tasks normally. But what if you are experiencing pain but haven’t made a visit to a doctor? How do you know when it is time for you to see a physiotherapist?

Constant Pain

Slight discomfort and body aches are normal ways for your body to tell you that you need rest. However, if you are constantly experiencing pain and discomfort, that could be something called chronic pain. Pain is considered chronic if it persists for more than 3 months.

This type of pain can cause a decline in physical health, limit your physical ability, and cause stress. It can also significantly affect your daily quality of life. Physiotherapists understand the struggle that comes with chronic pain and can help you to manage it.

Lack of Sleep

Pain can cause disrupted sleep, bringing along other issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, increased risk of diabetes, and obesity. For the body to heal from injuries and inflammation, sleep is necessary. Lack of sleep elongates the time of healing.

Physiotherapists will look for the root of the problem and may use holistic methods to try and treat and fix any issues. They recognize the value of good sleep and will assist you to find a better sleep regime.

Mobility Difficulties

Mobility issues can become worse over time when left untreated. Difficulty moving like you usually do may be caused by various factors such as neurological conditions, aging, obesity, injury, or mental health issues.

Physiotherapy will be beneficial to work up your level of mobility. You will be doing strengthening exercises, stretching, and practicing with walking aids along with techniques such as acupuncture or shock wave therapy as your physiotherapist sees fit.

An Injury That Takes Forever to Heal

Pain that does not heal can be very frustrating. Nerve injuries, joint pain, or muscle strains can take a long time to heal. You may want to speed up the process to get back to your normal life.

Physiotherapy assists in the healing of such injuries. You want to wait until sharp pain or burning sensations subside but waiting too long for treatment will decrease its effectiveness. Physiotherapists are skilled in developing a recovery plan to guide you. They will equip you with a regimen and remedies to work with your body while it heals.

Lack of Body Balance

Symptoms of balance include light-headedness and unsteadiness. This difficulty in maintaining your centre of gravity can affect your independence and increases the risk for further injury.

Causes of balance issues include ear infection, head injury, vision problems, poor circulation, and more. A physiotherapist will conduct an assessment to provide you with the right treatment plan that can include musculoskeletal treatments, optician referral, environmental advice, and a progression of exercises to improve your balance.
