Spine Savvy: Understanding Cervical and Lumbar Stenosis
Understanding Stenosis: Symptoms, Anatomy, Risk Factors, and Physiotherapy

Stenosis is a condition characterized by the narrowing of spaces within the spine, which can put pressure on the nerves that travel through the spine. There are two common types of stenosis: cervical stenosis and lumbar stenosis, affecting different areas of the spine.
What are the most symptoms of stenosis?
Cervical Stenosis occurs in the neck region (cervical spine), comprising seven vertebrae. The narrowing of the spinal canal in this area can compress the spinal cord or nerves, leading to symptoms such as neck pain, stiffness, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms and hands. In severe cases, balance issues, bladder problems, or loss of motor control can occur.
Lumbar Stenosis affects the lower back (lumbar spine), which includes five vertebrae. This narrowing compresses the nerves leading to the legs, often causing symptoms like lower back pain, leg pain, numbness, cramping, or weakness, particularly after standing or walking. This condition may improve with sitting or bending forward.
What is the anatomy of the area?
The anatomy of the cervical and lumbar regions includes vertebrae, intervertebral discs, ligaments, and nerves. Stenosis occurs when degenerative changes like osteoarthritis, herniated discs, or thickened ligaments lead to a reduced space in the spinal canal.
How can physiotherapy help?
Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in managing stenosis. At Delta Physiotherapy & Rehab, treatment focuses on relieving pain, improving mobility, and strengthening the muscles around the spine. Our physiotherapists use a combination of manual therapy, specific exercises, and posture education to alleviate nerve compression and reduce discomfort. We also provide strategies to modify activities and maintain an active lifestyle, helping our patients avoid surgery and improving their quality of life.
